Russian PET products group Retal Industries is acquiring the PET preform molding plant of plastics closures and preform company Uniplast in Dnipropetrovsk.

Retal Dnipro, the Ukrainian offshoot of Moscow-based Retal group, is due to take over the Uniplast preform operation and warehouses in Dnipropetrovsk for an undisclosed sum. The deal received the green light from Ukraine’s antitrust authority in October.

Uniplast, with additional closure and preform production at sites in Russia and Kazakhstan, was expected to reach an overall molding capacity in 2008 of 7.5 billion preforms. At its main Ukrainian site, the firm operates 26 injection presses, all Husky machines, molding up to 4 billion preforms annually.

The deal is the second announced by the two companies in recent months. Early in 2008, they revealed that Uniplast was to acquire Retal’s Bryansk plastic closures molding plant in Russia, which has annual capacity of 1.8bn units per year. The takeover was made by Uniplast’s Russian offshoot JSC Pet-Rus.

Retal agreed to sell that plant, where it molded closures, in line with its strategy to concentrate on PET resin, preforms and PET film products.

In 2006, Uniplast opened its Russian preforms and caps plant in Noginsk in the Moscow region, based on the growing demand for PET packaging, with a capacity of 2bn preforms and 1.8 billion closures.

At the same time, Uniplast launched factories in Krasnodar, Russia, capable of producing 670m preforms per year, and in Astana, Kasakhstan, manufacturing 750 million preforms and 210m caps per year. The company also had plans to expand its operations into Europe to serve markets further west.
